This project is central to the UK Commission’s ambition to transform the UK’s approach to investing in the skills of our people. The UK economy depends on the energy sector. Employment in energy is relatively small but it achieves the highest productivity per worker of any sector. The sector’s importance will only increase in the future as the economy strives to meet the challenge of the low carbon agenda and achieve greater energy security. Technology will be central to meeting these challenges but will create substantial skills needs.
However, the sector faces a number of performance challenges which must be overcome if it is to realise its potential.
