Breakfast with Logistics takes off in Doncaster

8 Oct 2013

Skills for Logistics (SfL) held its latest ‘Breakfast with Logistics’ event at Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster on 8 October. This important growth location offers opportunities for airfreight when the future Inland Port is implemented and will employ 5,000 people.

Speaking at the event, Scott Cardwell, Assistant Director of Development for Doncaster Borough Council, said: “Our road, rail and air links make the area around Robin Hood Airport a key location.”

The aim of the event was to raise awareness of a new initiative set out by Skills for Logistics to help people further understand what logistics is about. The industry will need an additional 900,000 workers by 2020 and young people will play a key part in filling these roles.

Speaking at the event Max Hyde, Vice President of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said: “We need to let children know that Logistics is more than lorries.”

Chris Hall, a Director at Skills for Logistics, opened the Breakfast event by setting out the organisation’s strategy. During the presentations delegates also learned about the activities of the Logistics Guild and its ambitious plans over the next few months.

After the presentations, delegates strolled round SfL’s ‘Logistics Market Street’ where they met project specialists who provided information about The Logistics Locker, The Professional Development Stairway and the new logistics board game – Business on the Move.

The ‘Breakfast with Logistics’ events are proving to be very popular with the logistics industry, having commenced in Milton Keynes in May 2013, with over 50 logistics employers and training providers as well as schools and colleges in attendance.

Sally Mawson, Implementation Specialist at Skills for Logistics, said: “The Logistics Sector needs new blood and ‘Breakfast with Logistics’ provides an opportunity to explain how we can help employers recruit and develop staff. Working with schools and colleges, allows us to show how great the sector is to work in, the career paths open to recruits and the willingness of employers to develop talent.”
