This is the Sector Skills Assessment (SSA) for the Energy production and utilities sector. The aim of the report is to provide authoritative labour market intelligence (LMI) for the sector in order to inform the development of skills policy across the UK.
The Energy production and utilities sector is important to the UK economy as it is responsible for the extraction of oil, gas and other fuels, the supply of water, the generation and distribution of electricity and gas and the management of waste. All of these activities have a crucial bearing on the sustainability and climate change agenda. The SSA provides an understanding of the skill needs arising from key drivers such as the low carbon agenda, new civil nuclear generating capacity and the expansion of distributed energy generation.
SSAs combine top-down data from official sources with bottom-up sectoral intelligence to provide a consistent, comparable and rich understanding of the skills priorities within sectors across the four UK nations. The reports have been produced to a common specification developed by the UK Commission in consultation with the four UK and devolved governments and follow a consistent structure.
