This is the Sector Skills Assessment for Information and Communication Technologies. The aim of the report is to provide authoritative labour market intelligence (LMI) for the sector in order to inform the development of skills policy across the UK.

The definition of Information and Communication Technologies used in this report covers a wide range of activities, including telecommunications, computer programming, consultancy activities, information services activities and repair of computers.

The sector is a major part of the UK economy contributing nearly £69 billion in gross value added. It is also one of the most productive, with a level of gross value added per employee job that is close to twice the average for all sectors.

The sector faces a range of key challenges, including the skills implications arising out of technological change, in areas such as Cloud Computing; social and mobile computing; ‘big data’ / smart computing / analytics, security and data protection.

SSAs combine top-down data from official sources with bottom-up sectoral intelligence to provide a consistent, comparable and rich understanding of the skills priorities within sectors across the four UK nations. The reports have been produced to a common specification (developed by the UK Commission in consultation with the four UK governments) and follow a consistent structure.
