This is the Sector Skills Assessment (SSA) for the transportation and storage sector. The aim of the report is to provide authoritative labour market intelligence (LMI) for the sector in order to inform the development of skills policy across the UK.

The definition of transportation and storage used in this report covers a range of activities including land transport and transport via pipelines; water transport; air transport; warehousing and support activities for transportation; and postal and courier services.

As well as contributing seven per cent of total UK output, the Transportation and storage sector performs a key “enabling” role for other sectors of the UK economy at both national and global levels.
The sector has productivity levels that are higher than the all-sector average for the UK economy but it lags behind the performance of competitor nations, including France and Germany, with regard to the key indicator of Total Factor Productivity.

The sector faces significant skills challenges arising from key drivers such as regulation, developments in vehicle technology and the need to reduce carbon emissions. SSAs combine top-down data from official sources with bottom-up sectoral intelligence to provide a consistent, comparable and rich understanding of the skills priorities within sectors across the four UK nations. The reports have been produced to a common specification developed by the UK Commission in consultation with the four UK and devolved governments and follow a consistent structure.
