This is the Sector Skills Assessment (SSA) for the Hospitality, Tourism and Sport sector. The aim of the report is to provide authoritative labour market intelligence (LMI) for the sector in order to inform the development of skills policy across the UK.

The definition of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport used in this report covers a range of activities, including accommodation; food and beverage services; travel agencies; tour operators; gambling and betting; sports activities; and amusement and recreation activities.

The sector has a key role in terms of UK employment, with a workforce of more than 2m people. It is also a particularly important source of employment for young people: one third of workers are aged under 25. Looking to the future, jobs in the sector are forecast to grow at a much faster rate than across the economy as a whole.

High rates of staff turnover mean the sector faces significant challenges around skills gaps and skills retention, whilst skills utilisation is also a key issue.

SSAs combine top-down data from official sources with bottom-up sectoral intelligence to provide a consistent, comparable and rich understanding of the skills priorities within sectors across the four UK nations. The reports have been produced to a common specification developed by the UK Commission in consultation with the four UK and devolved governments and follow a consistent structure.
