Local data
The UK Commission’s employer surveys and projections research provides a rich source of data at the local level. Data can be provided at a local level from three of our key products Working Futures, the UK Commission’s Employer Skills Survey and the UK Commission’s Employer Perspectives Survey.
This page contains data from:
Working Futures 2010-2020 is the UK Commission’s labour market model. The results provide a picture of employment prospects by industry, occupation, qualification level, gender and employment status for the UK and for nations and English regions up to 2020.
In addition to the published reports available from this website there is also a body of microdata that can be accessed via a dedicated Working Futures data portal. This includes indicative estimates and projections for local geographies.
For England, sub-regional analysis is available down to the level of Local Enterprise Partnerships; for Wales down to Economic Regions; and for Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Regions. This analysis is widely used by colleges, local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships.
For reasons of data confidentiality access to microdata is only available to analysts who hold a Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Notice. To find out more about the microdata available and the application process for a Notice please contact [email protected]
The size of the sample of this survey enables particularly detailed geographical analysis, for example, at upper tier local authority level and local enterprise partnership (LEP) level. These local results provide a comprehensive source of data for users:
- Employers can identify how they compare to their sector in their provision of training or own experience of skill deficiency and identify key challenges and opportunities for their sector
- Individuals and careers advisers can identify sectors and occupations experiencing particular shortages
- Providers of training and development can use the results to help shape provision to need in their locality or their specialist area.
This data is comparable to the England Results presented in the England Evidence Report. This is the set of skills survey results which are comparable to the NESS time series. Because of differences in the way the results in England and other nations have been sampled and analysed, they should not be compared with the UK Results or with results from other UK nations. They will be comparable with the results from the 2013 skills survey, which will be available in early 2014.
There are a number of products we have available at local level.
Local data maps
We have produced maps to summarise key variables from the England Results. These maps are available at upper tier local authority level, LEP, and English regional level. The data they are derived from is presented in the England Results report as an appendix; you can also download the data in Excel table format below.

Local data tables
These tables present data from the 2011 UK Employers Skill Survey at local authority and local enterprise partnership level. These tables present all results from the survey, not just the selected variables presented in map form above.
The UKCEPS 2012 gathered the views of 15,000 employers across the UK. A set of regional data tables (XML, 2.3 Mb) breaking down the data by English region are available for download . The UKCEPS 2012 underlying data is made available under the Open Database License whose full text can be found at UK Open Government Licence (OGL). Please read the guidance note (DOCX, 64 Kb) for further information.
In February and March 2013 we held three local skills data dissemination workshops at venues across England in order to promote greater use of our labour market intelligence and data.
The workshops focused on:
- The design and methodology of the three sources of data
- Illustrating how they can be used
- Advising on how local partners can gain access to the data
- Enabling attendees to improve their skills in using the data

This document sets out guidance for local partners in the area of Labour Market Information (LMI) and its conversion, through interpretation, into intelligence.
This guide sets out to:
- Provide an overview of the factors a local labour market assessment might cover;
- Highlight some of the key sources available for local labour market assessments and,
- Highlight what constitutes good practice in local LMI.
This guidance has been produced by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills as a key player in producing and raising awareness of local LMI to inform debate and decision-making, especially on skills issues.
