Income

Income is one measure that reflects disparity in labour market outcomes and material circumstances.  The indicators here chart international income inequality from the mid-1970’s onwards, and present average hourly pay by age, gender, nation, and region.

Education

Disparity of access to education opportunities can impact on the inequality of labour market outcomes. The indicators in this section present both GCSE attainment and participation in higher education by various socio-economic groupings.

Further Inequality Indicators

Further indicators measuring inequality can also be found elsewhere on Almanac Online, for example skills and employment outcomes by various socio-demographic groupings are readily available.

Inequality

Welcome to the Almanac Online pages on inequality. A small selection of key inequality indicators are presented in this section under two sub-themes – Income, and Education. We also reflect on the differential impacts of recession on different sub-groups in the spotlight feature ‘the labour market impacts of recession’.

Success in improving employment and productivity outcomes will depend on also reducing the inequality of labour market outcomes. Our economic performance, employment, productivity, and skills ambitions also require us to strive for a fair and inclusive society as we progress.

Spotlight Feature – The Impact of the Recession on Young People

Our spotlight in the Inequality theme focuses on the effect of the recession on young people.  From 2008 to 2010, the recession saw the national employment rate fall significantly, with a concomitant increase in the unemployment rate.  How did young people fare in this labour market?  Click through to the Spotlight Feature for the full article.
