Skills Supply: Working Age

The skills supply (as measured by qualifications level) of the working-age population (19-59/64) between 2002 and 2010 is presented in this section. Breakdowns are provided by region and nation, age, gender, and ethnicity. The skills supply of the UK working-age population is also benchmarked internationally against OECD countries.

Skills Supply: Workers

The distribution of qualifications for those in work is given here. As well as breakdowns by region, nation, age, gender, and ethnicity, we also present qualifications level by occupation, and employment status. Wherever possible all indicators by qualification level are also provided by sector and SSC.

Training

Training activity contributes to the supply of skills. A range of indicators which measure the incidence of training activity are presented here, including the number and proportion of employees receiving training in the last 4 and 13 weeks by region, sector, SSC, occupation, qualification, gender, age, and ethnicity. Measures of employer investment in training by sector, SSC, and nation are also presented.

 Skills Mismatches

Indicators of skills mismatch such as skills shortage vacancies, and skills gaps are provided in this section by sector, SSC, nation and region. The concept of skills mismatch is explored in more detail in the link opposite. We also provide a discussion of how to use skills mismatch indicators such as skills shortage vacancies and skills gaps.

Skills Outcomes

We provide key indicators that show various labour market outcomes by qualification level, such as employment, unemployment, and economic activity rates. Employment by qualifications level (by sector and SSC), and income by qualifications level and region can also be found in this section.

The Almanac Online Skills indicator pages contain information relating to skills supply (by qualifications level), training, skills mismatches, and labour market performance by skills level. See below for a description of each sub-theme.

This section also presents a series of skills question and answer articles, for example, what do we mean by skills? What do different kinds of skills mismatches mean, like skills shortage vacancy or skills gap? What do qualifications levels equate to?

Skills are one of the key contributors to economic and social success, at both an individual and macro level. The links between skills and the economy are many and complex.   The skills chapter in the UK Employment and Skills Almanac 2010 explores these links in more depth.

Spotlight Feature – International Labour Migration to the UK

Our Spotlight Feature in the Skills theme is on labour migration to the UK. A recurring theme of public debate, immigration, and particularly labour or economic migration, tends to be defined and discussed in inconsistent ways.  Click through to the Spotlight Feature to read more on the concepts, data sources and sub-populations surrounding this topic.
